Defensive Blog: Open Field Tackling

Open Field Tackling
Open Field Tackling is by far one of the most difficult things to do in football.
Rules changes, safety measures, and spread offenses have forced coaches to overhaul their approach to one of the most elemental facets of football: Tackling. No matter what, there are a few things that will never change when it comes to tackling.
Keys that will never change
Tracking the near hip while closing the distance- Defenders frequently make the mistake of sprinting as hard as they can at the ball, only to completely miss the second the carrier changes direction. To stop this from happening, slow down when about three to five yards away from the ball carrier, then mirror everything he does.
Keep your head up- Safety FIRST! And this allows you to react correctly to ball carrier movements.
Drill it everyday- Practice tracking ball carriers everyday, proper footwork alignment, and develop the mentality and mindset.
Key Coaching Points
Do what you need to do to get ball carrier down
Defenders take small quick steps keeping feet on the ground moving toward ball carrier
